The State of Canada’s First Nations’ Children By: Saara Ali

What happened to the state of Canada’s First Nations children? Well, many of them live on reservations. Throughout Canada’s history, First Nations have faced many difficult obstacles.

Europeans gave the First Nations a small area to live in, with horrible conditions. Also, they were discriminated against because of their culture, ethnicity and language. Lastly, aboriginal people deal with identity crisis.

They do not have clean (or enough) water to drink. Also, they have poor shelter and clothing. For example, the houses many of them live in are old, moldy and too small for their family.

First Nations get discriminated against because of their skin, the type of nature they live in and the way their live. Ever since the Europeans came to Canada they took the freedom from the First Nations people.

Because of this history, they often, eventually, get depressed. Because of that they have a higher chance of suicide and getting sick (diseases and so forth). If they were 18 and over they would get a chance to leave the small place they used to live in and go out to the city. Since there is so much discrimination against the First Nations, they have a very rough time finding jobs, housing and fitting in.

There used to be residential schools where the Europeans put the First Nations, to make them act like a European. The Europeans hoped the First Nations way of life could be squeezed out of them. They were, physically, abused in these residential schools, for just talking in their own language. The government eventually closed the residential schools.

Also, there are dozens of missing aboriginals (some men but mostly women). Police got told but have ignored these incidents many times. Now, finally, they’re looking into it.
