The Status of Canada’s First Nations’ Children By: Dineva McLean

First Nations are the people who were the first to find Canada. They were misnamed “Indian” by the early explorers whom thought they landed in India. We come to understand they now prefer to be called “First Nations”. First Nations people identify themselves as Mohawk, Cree, Oneida and so on. They can be found throughout different parts of Canada. When a child is born into a First Nations family, he or she is taken care of by the mother until two or three years old. The boys grow up and follow their fathers to hunt and do men chores. The girls follow their mothers and are taught how to clean, do traditional woman’s work like making baskets, working the fields and cook.

The states of Canada’s First Nations children today need improvement. The children face a lot of problems which affects their health and lifestyle. The problems are with poverty, low education, lack of access to healthy foods, clean drinking water, lack of access to proper health care and lack of social supports all which affect their abilities to achieve good health. There are other factors that can have an effect on First Nations children which are their genetics, personal lifestyle choices and physical fitness.

We, all, can help the First Nations children, by improving some of their most important needs within their communities, by improving their education, finding a way to make sure they can get clean drinking water and hiring doctors and nurses to help provide good healthcare.

I believe if we can all come together in our loving country Canada and help the First Nations children have a better life, they can live just as equal like my friends and me.
